Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday moved to take up the nomination of Matthew Marzano to serve on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Marzano’s confirmation would give Democrats a lasting majority on the NRC. Even though Republicans have expressed concern about the his qualifications, Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) move to take up Marzano suggests he has the votes to advance.

The Environment and Public Works Committee approved Marzano last month along party lines. Republicans said President-elect Donald Trump should fill the seat.

“I believe that the White House has sort of exaggerated Mr. Marzano’s experience in the nuclear energy industry,” said ranking member Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.). I do not have confidence that he has the necessary background and experience to be that agent of change at the Commission.”
