Scientists fume over Bill Gates climate memo

Scientists are reeling after one of the world’s most influential climate advocates criticized what he labeled a “doomsday” outlook by the climate community.

The contentious new memo penned by billionaire philanthropist and longtime climate advocate Bill Gates last month has sent shock waves through the environmental and climate science worlds.

Climate scientists fear the memo — sent by one of the world’s richest and most powerful people — sends the wrong message, particularly as global leaders are heading to Brazil this month for annual U.N. climate negotiations.

Gates argues that a “doomsday” view of climate change is wrong and is hurting progress on other important issues. He also contends that although climate change “will have serious consequences,” it “will not lead to humanity’s demise.”
