The Senate on Thursday afternoon advanced along party lines the nomination of Howard Lutnick to lead the Commerce Department.

The chamber vote to wind down debate on Lutnick was 52-45, with no Democrats supporting President Donald Trump’s pick. Every Republican present voted in favor.

“Mr. Lutnick will ensure that American taxpayer dollars are spent efficiently, and that Congress gets the benefit of the bargain on legislation like the CHIPS and Science Act,” said Commerce, Science and Transportation Chair Ted Cruz (R-Texas) during floor debate.

Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was the only Democrat to support Lutnick in committee. However, Fetterman voted against cloture Thursday.
