The Senate on Monday advanced the nomination of Jamieson Greer to be trade representative, a key part of President Donald Trump’s Cabinet with an impact on energy and environment policy.
Lawmakers voted 55-42 to wind down debate on Greer and 66-28 to do the same for Army secretary pick Daniel Driscoll. A final vote on Driscoll is likely Tuesday. Greer is poised to be confirmed by Wednesday.
During his confirmation hearing, lawmakers questioned Greer on carbon tariffs and other trade issues affecting energy. Greer said he was open to discussing ideas to put a price on certain imports for their pollution. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, one proponent, was among the Democratic “yes” votes on cloture.
Greer defended President Donald Trump’s use of tariffs to bolster U.S. manufacturing and competitiveness. He said that included renewable energy development.
