The Senate on Tuesday evening confirmed Pam Bondi to become attorney general mostly along party lines.
The chamber voted 54-46 for the former Florida attorney general, who was a lawyer for President Donald Trump during his first impeachment trial.
Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was the only Democrat to support her. Chair Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) last month touted a “flood of support” from around the country, but many other Democrats have expressed concern about her independence from Trump.
“President Trump has said time and again that he expects the Justice Department to seek ‘retribution’ on his behalf. With Ms. Bondi, I’m afraid, the president has finally found someone who passes his loyalty test,” said Judiciary ranking member Dick Durbin (D-Ill.).
