Senate confirms EPA, Army Corps nominees before recess

Lawmakers left until September without a deal to approve many more of President Donald Trump’s picks.

The Senate cleared a handful of nominees Saturday before leaving town for the August recess without a deal to confirm many more of President Donald Trump’s picks.

The impasse means Republicans will continue considering changing the Senate’s rules to accelerate the approval process for dozens of pending candidates.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Trump, who had been insisting on getting more than 150 pending nominees confirmed, “went home with nothing.”

Trump also appeared to declare victory because the administration didn’t give into the Democrats’ demands that it unfreeze funding and forego future rescissions packages.
