The Senate may vote as soon as this week on legislation to repeal President Joe Biden’s mining limits near the Minnesota Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

The House last month approved a resolution under the Congressional Review Act to make way for new mining in the Superior National Forest in northeastern Minnesota.

If passed by Congress, it would be the first time lawmakers use the CRA to overturn a presidential mineral withdrawal. Supporters say unprecedented action is necessary.

“Before Biden’s mining ban, we had the opportunity to mine the copper, the nickel, the cobalt, and other critical minerals that are necessary for this country to compete and win in the 21st century,” said sponsor Pete Stauber (R-Minn.), chair of the Natural Resources Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources.
