The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will vote on a long-awaited permitting bill meant to speed up infrastructure project approvals. Extreme heat legislation is also on the markup agenda.

S. 4679, the “Permitting Council Improvement Act of 2024,” from Chair Gary Peters (D-Mich.), would bolster the federal bureau in charge of helping certain major initiatives get off the ground.

The Permitting Council, established in 2015, allows developers with project plans worth over $200 million to apply for “coverage” meant to improve coordination between agencies.
