Senate appropriators unveiled a bipartisan bill Sunday that would extend government funding beyond the Sept. 30 deadline, buying lawmakers more time to negotiate a long-term spending deal.
The stopgap includes extenders and authorizations for a number of environmental and infrastructure programs but leaves out special funding the White House had requested for national parks operations, wildfire management and disaster recovery in North Carolina.
The bipartisan deal underscores Senate appropriators’ desire to avoid a government shutdown this fall, even as they struggle to come to terms on the annual funding measures.
The continuing resolution would punt the funding deadline to Dec. 11 — one week longer than the bill that House Republicans passed last month. Senate leaders want to pass their version before the upper chamber begins its recess at the end of the week.
