Senators say they hope to pass several bills to bolster the federal response to natural disasters later this year, potentially aiding wildfire prevention and early warning detection efforts.
Sens. Peter Welch (D-Vt.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), John Curtis (R-Utah) and Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) headlined a bipartisan roundtable Tuesday during which they pitched their disaster bills, including some they said could be incorporated in upcoming must-pass legislative packages.
Curtis and Murkowski were the sole Republicans present at the event and made clear that they were ready to lend their support to some Democratic bills on the issue.
“A lot of the bills coming forward on this are bipartisan, and we need to figure out how to get them across the finish line,” Curtis said.
