Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee lawmakers pushed Department of Energy officials Thursday on the administration’s ability to keep up with global artificial intelligence innovation and the strain it puts on the grid.
The same committee convened last year to discuss how DOE uses AI. This week’s hearing was intended to address advanced computing more broadly, but AI was still front of mind.
Numerous senators asked officials whether the department’s supercomputers, which are at the vanguard of AI research, can match competition from China.
Chair Joe Manchin (I-W.Va.) said the stakes for leading global AI innovation “are nothing short of our economic prosperity and national security.”
