Shutdown staredown enters its second week

The House may stay in recess for a third straight week unless there’s a breakthrough.

Congress is entering the second week of a government shutdown with more votes planned on Democratic and Republican funding bills — but no path forward to reopening agencies.

The Senate on Monday will vote for the fifth time to advance the dueling continuing resolutions, or CRs — and for the fifth time, senators are likely to block both.

Some lawmakers are continuing to have preliminary discussions about extending soon-to-expire health care subsidies — a sticking point in the government funding fight — but the conversations are in the early stages.

Complicating matters is the fact that the House will remain in recess for the third consecutive week unless leaders call lawmakers back. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) told told reporters that House Republicans “don’t have anything to negotiate.”
