The Sierra Club is cutting staff in the latest round of downsizing at the green group that’s struggled with budget shortfalls and internal drama in recent years.
The environmental organization notified its union this week that the group intends to lay off staff, the Progressive Workers Union said Thursday in a statement. Management also notified staff at Sierra Club’s regional chapters that it’s offering voluntary severance incentives, said the union, which represents employees at the green group.
“Several Sierra Club chapters have made the difficult but necessary decision to part ways with several of our colleagues who have helped drive our work forward in challenging times,” Sierra Club spokesperson Jonathon Berman said Friday in an email.
The expected cuts come as the Sierra Club and other environmental groups are battling President Donald Trump over environmental policies and over the administration’s cuts to the federal workforce.
