The automaker is idling plants in Canada and Mexico, which will affect employees in Michigan and Indiana.

Stellantis said Thursday that it is temporarily laying off 900 workers at five U.S. facilities as it idles production at two plants in Canada and Mexico in response to President Donald Trump’s new 25 percent auto tariffs.

In an email to North American workers Thursday morning, a few hours after Trump’s duties kicked in on imports of cars and light trucks, Stellantis’ chief operating officer for the continent, Antonio Filosa, said the company’s action was “necessary given the current market dynamics.”

It’s an early test of Trump’s tolerance for short-term economic upheaval as he seeks to reshape global trade in the long term via his battery of tariffs.
