Texas oil regulator runoff mirrors Senate showdown

As with the race for Sen. John Cornyn’s seat, a Republican incumbent at the state Railroad Commission will try to beat a far-right challenger.

FORT WORTH, Texas — A Texas incumbent is facing a strong challenge from the far right with a month to go until a runoff — and a Democrat is waiting to pounce on the winner this fall.

But this isn’t the Republican primary clash featuring Sen. John Cornyn and state Attorney General Ken Paxton for a Senate seat.

It’s the GOP race for a spot at the Railroad Commission of Texas, one of the most important oil and gas regulators in the country. Statewide Texas runoffs are set for May 26.

The oddly named Railroad Commission oversees the oil, gas and pipeline industries in Texas. It has three members who are elected statewide, though environmental critics have long called it a captive agency in need of change.
