Texas prepares for boom in gas plants — and emissions

State regulators are reviewing plans for more than 100 new gas-fired energy projects.

Surging electricity demand foiled Texas conservatives’ plans this year to slap new restrictions on the renewable energy sector.

But that same spike could drive a massive, taxpayer-subsidized expansion of the state’s gas-fired generation fleet, according to a new report from environmental advocates.

Texas regulators are considering plans for 130 gas-fired energy projects — with at least 108 of those representing totally new power plants, according to an analysis by the Environmental Integrity Project.

The group on Wednesday published an inventory of proposed gas projects, along with a map.
