At least one Senate Republican is opposing legislation to undo a Biden-era prohibition on new mining near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Minnesota.
The resolution would strike former President Joe Biden’s 2023 order that withdrew 225,000 acres in the Superior National Forest for more than 20 years from new mining claims.
The House passed the measure, from Rep. Pete Stauber (R-Minn.), H.J. Res 140, in January. Now supporters may have until April 24 for the Senate to pass it by simple majority under the Congressional Review Act, said Stauber.
But opponents, including environmental and hunting groups, have been lobbying moderates. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) said this week he was voting “no.”
