The top Democrat on the House Transportation Committee told POLITICO on Tuesday he is in favor of including a fee on electric vehicles and hybrid cars in the long-awaited surface transportation bill.

“I support an EV fee, yeah,” ranking member Rick Larsen (D-Wash.) said in an interview, adding that he would support a registration fee on hybrid vehicles as well to help the depleted Highway Trust Fund, which provides money for transportation and infrastructure projects across the country.

Larsen had not previously said whether he supported such a fee. It’s a positive sign for the proposal, which has long been backed by Transportation Chair Sam Graves (R-Mo.). Text for the bill has not yet been released.
