Peter Navarro, an outspoken advocate for tariffs and opponent of free-trade policies, will be an adviser to President-elect Donald Trump.
Navarro will be senior counselor for trade and manufacturing, with a portfolio that includes carrying out his promises for across-the-board tariffs, Trump wrote on his social media outlet, Truth Social.
Navarro served in the White House during Trump’s first term, leading a group dubbed the National Trade Council and later the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy.
He assisted Trump in attempts to overturn the 2020 election loss and was jailed for four months for contempt of Congress after he refused to cooperate with lawmakers investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
