Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy on Wednesday had harsh words for the states that sued him for withholding billions of dollars that Congress approved to build electric vehicle charging stations.

Duffy criticized the attorneys general of 16 Democrat-led states and the District of Columbia for being too slow to spend the funds, which between all states totals $5 billion.

“The Biden-Buttigieg Administration failed miserably to deliver EV chargers despite their promises,” Duffy said in a statement, referring to the former president and to Duffy’s predecessor as Transportation secretary, Pete Buttegieg, who is considering a run for president in 2028.

The slow rollout of the charging initiative, known as the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program, or NEVI, became a campaign issue last year as then-candidate Donald Trump characterized it as both inefficient and a waste of money.
