President Donald Trump has appointed an alumnus from his first administration with waste-industry ties to lead EPA’s most-northeastern region.
Mark Sanborn earlier this week was sworn in as the agency administrator for Region 1, which oversees Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont and 10 tribal nations.
EPA is the fourth federal agency to employ Sanborn, who held jobs at the Transportation, Agriculture, and Housing and Urban Development departments between 2017 and 2021.
Sanborn served as assistant commissioner for the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services for two years before he resigned in September 2023 to direct government relations for a commercial construction firm. Earlier that summer, he faced scrutiny over emails that show him offering advice to waste management company Casella on legislation regarding landfill development, the New Hampshire Bulletin reported.
