The Trump administration has instructed the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine to halt at least two studies sponsored by NOAA, the research organization confirmed.

One termination order sent by NOAA was sent Wednesday, citing compliance with President Donald Trump’s executive order on diversity, equity and inclusion programs, according to a document obtained by POLITICO’s E&E News. That’s one day after representatives of Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency appeared at NOAA’s headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, seeking access to information technology.

One current employee and former officials briefed on activities said that DOGE is specifically seeking to scrub DEI-related materials from NOAA’s internal systems.

The termination order immediately curtailed an ongoing study on fisheries management, with part of the research focused on determining whether fishing permits and quotas are fairly and equitably allocated to people across the country.
