EPA funding would plunge to a level not seen since the 1980s under a White House proposal released Friday, which calls for slashing over half of the agency’s budget.
The Trump administration’s “skinny budget” for fiscal 2026 would cut hundreds of millions in funds for EPA research and science, nearly eliminate popular drinking water and wastewater programs and ax roughly half of the current funding for hazardous waste cleanups.
It would also eliminate over $1 billion in categorical grants that help states and tribes address pollution challenges. It would end the Atmospheric Protection Program, which focuses on protecting the ozone layer and addressing climate change.
Across the federal government, the budget would cut nondefense spending by 23 percent compared to current levels, the White House said. But EPA would take a particularly big hit.
