A bipartisan housing affordability package that would authorize a popular disaster recovery program and streamline permitting for home construction was thrust into uncertainty Wednesday morning when President Donald Trump abruptly canceled the bill-signing ceremony.
The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act cleared the Senate on Monday by a huge margin, and the House followed suit with a sweeping bipartisan vote Tuesday — enough to override a hypothetical veto from the president.
Trump was scheduled to sign the legislation, which his administration supports, in the Capitol at noon. He announced on social media shortly before 10:30 a.m. that the bill signing would be put off until Republicans advance their signature election security bill — a top priority for the White House and congressional conservatives.
That legislation has been stalled for months because it lacks sufficient support in the Senate. Trump was scheduled to have lunch with Senate Republicans in the Capitol on Wednesday, and the SAVE America Act was on the agenda.
