Trump, Carney speak by phone, agree to meet in ‘near future’

President Donald Trump congratulated Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney for his electoral victory in a phone call Tuesday, the prime minister’s office said in a statement. Carney’s office added that both leaders agreed to soon meet in person.

“The leaders agreed on the importance of Canada and the United States working together — as independent, sovereign nations — for their mutual betterment,” the readout said.

“To that end, the leaders agreed to meet in person in the near future.”

A spokesperson for the White House confirmed the leaders spoke Tuesdaty in a statement to POLITICO but did not respond to a question about a potential meeting.
