William McGinley, a longtime GOP lawyer and former Trump White House aide, will serve as counsel to President-elect Donald Trump’s regulatory-slashing team, Trump announced Wednesday.
McGinley, who was previously White House Cabinet secretary in Trump’s first term, will work with Elon Musk, Vivek Ramaswamy “and their team of incredible pioneers” as part of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, Trump said.
The announcement marks an early personnel shuffle in the Trump team after the president-elect had previously announced that McGinley would serve as White House counsel. That role, Trump said, will go instead to David Warrington, Trump’s personal attorney and general counsel for his campaign.
The Trump team has not yet made clear how the Musk-led team will fit into the federal government. Musk and Ramaswamy have said they plan to serve as outside volunteers, not government employees, in their quest to downsize the government and cut regulations.
