The government’s purchaser took the first official regulatory step away from paper straws.
A proposal published Monday would tweak the rules on federal acquisitions promoting the “strength and durability of plastic straws” and requiring government contractors prove they don’t use paper straws or ones made from alternative or biobased plastic materials.
The proposed rule aligns U.S. purchasing policies with President Donald Trump’s February executive order intending “to end the use of paper straws.”
“The facts of the case are clear and simple: paper straws cost more, are ineffective, carry increased health and safety risks, and unduly burden individuals with disabilities,” the proposal says.
