Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle were taken aback Tuesday by President Donald Trump’s decision against renominating a federal energy regulator with broad support.
The White House will let Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Chair Mark Christie’s time on the panel expire at the end of the month. Energy attorney Laura Swett would replace him once confirmed.
Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), a former state energy regulator and Trump confidante, learned about the development when asked about it by POLITICO’s E&E News. He appeared shocked.
“I guess I didn’t even hear that. OK, really?” Cramer said Tuesday. “That’s interesting, yeah, that really surprises me.”
