Solar power has long been the bright spot of America’s energy transition. Where wind, electric vehicles and heat pumps have all struggled at times, solar has forged ahead.
Until now, anyway.
President Donald Trump’s drive to impose sweeping tariffs on a broad swath of foreign imports has the potential to upend the U.S. solar industry, snarling supply chains and driving up the costs of new developments.
The tariffs represent a significant challenge to an industry that imported almost 75 percent of its panels last year, the vast majority of which were made in four Southeast Asian nations targeted with high reciprocal tariffs by Trump.
