David Copley has left his perch leading minerals efforts on the White House’s National Energy Dominance Council to join the National Security Council, according to the White House.
A White House official confirmed that Copley left his position on the council but stopped short of providing detail about what he will focus on at the NSC. An industry source familiar with the move said Copley was promoted and is now both the White House mineral and supply chain czar.
POLITICO’s E&E News first reported that Copley, an industry and military veteran who worked at the State Department during Trump’s first stint in office, had landed at the National Energy Dominance Council in March. In months since his arrival, President Donald Trump has put critical minerals at the forefront of his international dealmaking, from Ukraine to Greenland and the Congo, and moved to open more public land and claw back regulations to boost domestic mining and processing.
It’s not clear who, if anyone, will fill Copley’s slot on the council.
