President Donald Trump released an order late Monday night dropping tariffs on tractors and industrial equipment with the aim of promoting “domestic economic activity” in key industries. But it also drops rates on a varied range of other goods, from air conditioners and industrial cooking stoves to electric space heaters.
It’s the second time the White House has modified its expansive approach to steel and aluminum tariffs, which apply to a vast number of goods made from those metals. The 25 percent tariff originally hit a litany of downstream products, even things like shampoos and deodorant.
The White House framed the latest step as an effort to temporarily ease the tariff burden on the agriculture and manufacturing sectors.
“The Trump administration has always been clear about implementing a nimble and multi-faceted strategy to reshore critical manufacturing back to the United States,” said White House spokesperson Kush Desai. “The President’s proclamation is yet another example of this approach by reducing tariffs on the capital goods that are key for America’s industrial buildout and resurgence.”
