Britain is seeking a carveout for precision breeding rules from its new agrifood agreement with the European Union, the U.K. government has indicated.
The post-Brexit rules allow breeders in England to use gene-editing technology to make targeted changes to the DNA of crops or animals.
Official guidance for agri businesses published on Thursday confirms that “precision breeding is subject to ongoing negotiations between the U.K. and the EU as part of the SPS agreement.”
It adds that “the EU have accepted there will need to be a number of areas where we need to retain our own rules.”
