Utah Republican Gov. Spencer Cox became chair Tuesday of the bipartisan Western Governors’ Association.

Cox, who succeeds New Mexico’s Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, will focus the group’s efforts on meeting energy demand across the West during his one-year term, he said from the Western Governors’ Association meeting in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

His initiative, titled “Energy Superabundance: Unlocking Prosperity in the West,” will look at “expanding production, modernizing transmission, and supporting advanced generation technologies” to help build “a more reliable, affordable, and secure grid.”

“Our new focus on energy is bold — and urgently needed. It’s been nearly 50 years since we’ve had this kind of moment: rising demand, available capital, and the political will to build,” Cox said in a statement.
