Two Republican clean energy proponents face a tougher path to reelection after Virginia voters this week approved a new congressional redistricting plan that puts both lawmakers into Democratic leaning districts.

Reps. Jen Kiggans and Rob Wittman, who were already considered vulnerable in this year’s midterm elections, now face even steeper odds as they look to retain their seats.

Both will rely on their respective records on pro-renewable energy policies — putting them at odds with a Republican majority that has sought to promote fossil fuels — to win over voters in their new, bluer districts.

Kiggans on Wednesday, responding to the redistricting referendum’s result, said it was a “sad day” for the state but pledged to fight. “Under these newly drawn districts and the partisan leadership of [Democratic Gov.] Abigail Spanberger, conservative voices and values have been eliminated,” Kiggans wrote on X. “That’s not leadership, it’s a disservice to the principles of fair representation that define our country.”
