Washington’s carbon market survives; Statehouse Dems struggling

Voters’ decision to keep the state’s marquee climate policy could encourage similar programs elsewhere.

States became a bulwark for climate action during the first Trump administration.

But as Democrats grapple with the return of former President Donald Trump to the White House, their climate ambitions are facing setbacks at the state level, too.

Democrats were struggling to hang onto control in states where they’ve recently passed major climate laws, such as Michigan and Minnesota. And while they turned back some ballot initiatives targeting climate policy, others remained too close to call.

Republicans, on the other hand, saw some erosion of support in climate-vulnerable states where they’ve long held sway, like North Carolina.
