House Speaker Mike Johnson is promising a vote Wednesday on legislation to extend government spending well into next year to avoid a shutdown at the end of the month.
It’s the same bill Johnson (R-La.) pulled from the floor last week because of Republican dissent and almost unanimous opposition from Democrats.
Not only do Democrats want a shorter continuing resolution, but they object to including the “SAVE Act,” which would require proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections.
“Congress has an immediate obligation to do two things: responsibly fund the federal government and ensure the security of our elections,” Johnson said Tuesday about staying the course on his legislation.
