The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research is suing the Trump administration over its plans to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research, asserting that the move is part of a “campaign of retaliation against the State of Colorado.”

UCAR, a nonprofit consortium of North American universities, manages the major climate science institution, which is located in Boulder and funded by the National Science Foundation. The White House budget office announced in December that it would break up NCAR, moving its vital functions to other entities or locations.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, alleges a wide-ranging slate of federal policy violations. It accuses the Trump administration of violating the law by restricting employee speech, terminating a NOAA funding award and planning the transfer of a major NCAR supercomputing facility.
