The White House sent Congress a request Tuesday to claw back $9.4 billion in previously appropriated funds, including hundred of millions of dollars for international disaster assistance and climate programs.
House leaders want to put the rescissions package up for a vote next week. Senate Republicans are hoping to amend it before sending it back to the House for a final vote.
The request for formal cuts takes aim at current funding for the State Department and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting that Congress previously approved in bipartisan spending bills. It is based on recommendations from the so-called Department of Government Efficiency and represents the White House’s first step toward trying to cement those proposed cuts in law.
“This rescissions package reflects many of DOGE’s findings and is one of the many legislative tools Republicans are using to restore fiscal sanity,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said in a statement. “Congress will continue working closely with the White House to codify these recommendations, and the House will bring the package to the floor as quickly as possible.”
