Following suggestions that layoffs of federal workers were imminent because of the government shutdown, the White House said Friday that layoffs had started.
“The RIFs have begun,” Russ Vought, director of the White House Office of Management and Budget posted Friday on the social media site X, referring to the “reduction-in-force” process used to lay off government workers.
An administration official granted anonymity to discuss the layoffs told POLITICO they will hit EPA and the Interior, Energy and Commerce departments, along with Homeland Security, Education, Treasury, Health and Human Services, and Housing and Urban Development.
“Can confirm RIFs have begun and they are substantial,” an OMB spokesperson told POLITICO. “These are RIFs not furloughs.”
