The White House has come out in opposition to a Republican-led bill that it says would burden Americans with higher taxes while undermining efforts to fight global warming.
At the same time, the Biden administration is stopping short of issuing a veto threat — perhaps a sign the legislation could win support from some moderate Democrats in tough reelection fights when it reaches the House floor Thursday.
The “End Chinese Dominance of Electric Vehicles in America Act,” H.R. 7980, would block Inflation Reduction Act incentives for any electric vehicles that contain battery materials that were extracted, processed, recycled, manufactured or assembled in a “prohibited foreign entity.”
Most Democrats view the legislation from Rep. Carol Miller (R-W.Va.) as an attack on efforts to accelerate the transition away from vehicles powered by combustion fuel engines, a major source of pollution contributing to the climate crisis.
