World frets about US on climate. What’s the GOP message?

Rep. August Pfluger, a fossil fuel backer from Texas, was at the U.N. climate summit in Azerbaijan recently, where he heard a constant refrain: deep worry from foreign representatives over the fate of the landmark climate law, the Inflation Reduction Act.

“Oh yeah, we heard lots of anxiety; we heard a ton,” the Republican from the oil-rich Permian Basin recalled in an interview Thursday.

“And we got questions, ‘Are you going to repeal all of the IRA?’ The answer to that is, ‘No,’ but I mean, there may be good pieces and parts of it, but the pieces and parts of the IRA that are counterproductive to affordability, reliability, all those factors — they need to be repealed.”

Foreign leaders have reason to be concerned about the United States’ stance on combating climate change. President-elect Donald Trump and congressional Republicans have consistently said they want to expand oil and gas production, roll back environmental regulations, and repeal swaths of the IRA.
