Zeldin prepares for Hill gauntlet

The EPA administrator will testify before at least three panels. House appropriators will also keep moving fiscal 2027 bills.

House and Senate lawmakers will question EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin during several hearings this week about the White House’s budget request and the agency’s deregulatory agenda.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Energy Secretary Chris Wright have already begun making the rounds. Burgum is scheduled to return Wednesday. For Zeldin, this week’s hearing appearances will be his first in months.

Democrats in particular will grill Zeldin about his quest to scrap regulations, reorganize the agency and cut spending by roughly half compared to current levels.

“I mean, there’s a 52 percent cut. So we’ll talk about staffing levels. We’ll talk about some of our concerns [about] their cut to the research. You know, really, some of the studies that have been done. How they’re moving people around,” said Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine), ranking member of the House Interior-Environment Appropriations Subcommittee.
