The commitment from the developer of the chatbot Claude comes amid concerns about the cost of the AI boom to consumers.

Anthropic, the AI startup behind the chatbot Claude, said Wednesday that it will cover the full cost of the electricity used by its data centers.

The pledge from the San Francisco-based company is similar to one the White House has been discussing with large tech companies, as reported by POLITICO this week. According to a draft of the White House agreement — which has not been formally announced — the administration wants companies to commit to covering their electric infrastructure costs, sign long-term power contracts and establish rates that would not raise nearby residential electricity prices.

In a blog post Wednesday, Anthropic said that AI companies “shouldn’t leave American ratepayers to pick up the tab.”

The company said it would work with utilities and experts to calculate the full cost of grid upgrades associated with data centers, including infrastructure like transmission lines and substations. The company would then cover those costs and prevent them from being spread out among all consumers’ bills.
