Arizona voters won’t be able to pick a successor for the late Rep. Raúl Grijalva for more than six months.

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs (D) on Friday set the special election for Grijalva’s 7th District seat for Sept. 23, following July 15 primaries.

The declaration followed the Thursday death of Grijalva, a longtime leader on environmental and natural resources policy, due to complications from cancer.

The schedule aligns closely with what state law requires for House seats that are open due to death or resignation. A primary must be held 120 to 133 days after the death and a general election 70 to 80 days after that.
