Arizona voters Tuesday will pick the likely successor to Rep. Raúl Grijalva with his daughter well positioned for victory in the Democratic primary.

Adelita Grijalva, a former member of the Board of Supervisors in Pima County, has racked up major endorsements from various corners of the Democratic Party ahead of the primary. Her rivals include former state lawmaker Daniel Hernández Jr. and activist Deja Foxx.

The elder Grijalva, a major progressive figure and former chair of the House Natural Resources Committee, died in March from complications related to cancer. He had held the seat representing parts of Tucson and a large swath of southern Arizona since 2003.

Being the late lawmaker’s daughter has been a double-edged sword for Grijalva. She has benefited from the name recognition but also fought back accusations that she is banking on a political dynasty.
