Senate Agriculture Chair John Boozman (R-Ark.) is set to release his farm bill text Tuesday, according to three people familiar with the conversations, teeing up a fight over Democrats’ nutrition demands and some Republicans’ priorities that aren’t expected to be included.
Committee staff will privately brief Senate Agriculture Committee members and industry groups Monday ahead of the bill’s official introduction, according to the people familiar who were all granted anonymity to discuss the private plans.
Democrats have said they will not support a farm bill package that doesn’t delay the implementation of the GOP’s domestic policy package that will soon force some states to foot part of the bill for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.
Boozman’s plan is expected to omit some controversial GOP priorities in an effort to secure enough Democratic support to clear the Senate’s 60-vote threshold. Boozman is aiming to mark up the bill between the chamber’s July Fourth and August recesses.
