Senate Environment and Public Works Chair Shelley Moore Capito said Thursday she’s leaning toward not attaching a contentious rail safety measure to any surface transportation extension.
The West Virginia Republican also poured cold water on the idea of nixing the Highway Trust Fund’s mass transit account.
Both are priorities of the Trump administration as outlined in a request sent to Congress on Wednesday.

In a letter to key Senate panels, including EPW, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy urged lawmakers to attach the Railway Safety Act to either a surface extension or the full reauthorization bill. (An extension is widely expected as a Sept. 30 deadline looms to re-up expiring surface programs.)
