A coalition of environmental groups is challenging federal authorization of a new gas pipeline expansion project in Virginia and North Carolina.
In a new lawsuit filed this week in a federal appeals court in Washington, Appalachian Voices and other groups allege that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission did not adequately study the environmental risks posed by the Southeast Supply Enhancement project (SSEP).
The Williams Cos. project, which FERC green-lighted in January, is designed to meet growing energy demands in the Southeast.
SSEP adds about 55 miles of pipeline to the company’s existing natural gas transmission system, along with other gas infrastructure. Construction on the project began in March.
