The House approved legislation Tuesday that would address land concerns in North Dakota dating back to the state’s founding.

The “North Dakota Trust Lands Completion Act,” H.R. 2252, from Rep. Julie Fedorchak (R-N.D.), would allow the state to relinquish land and mineral rights considered stranded within tribal areas. In exchange, the state would get tracts elsewhere that could be used for economic development.

House Natural Resources Chair Bruce Westerman (R-Ark.) said the legislation “provides a better path forward that is a win-win for everyone involved.”
