Republicans say the bills would accelerate reactor deployment. Democrats warn one proposal could sideline independent safety experts.

A House Energy and Commerce subcommittee will vote this week on a package of bills aimed at further streamlining regulations for nuclear reactor development.

The Energy Subcommittee is scheduled to consider several measures — many with bipartisan support — that lawmakers say build on the ADVANCE Act, the 2024 law intended to accelerate deployment of advanced reactors by overhauling what industry advocates viewed as an overly cumbersome Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensing process.

“Burdensome regulations and a costly licensing process have made it difficult to expand the use of nuclear power,” said Energy and Commerce Chair Brett Guthrie (R-Ky.) and Energy Subcommittee Chair Bob Latta (R-Ohio). “By building on the ADVANCE Act, we can deliver the reliable power needed to support America’s continued energy dominance.”

The markup comes as the Energy and Commerce Committee is still waiting to reschedule a full committee vote on legislation to shield ratepayers from electricity costs associated with data centers and boost the nation’s grid. Pipeline safety legislation is also pending.
